Global Mosaïque Care's non-profit program component offers free long-term mental health & case management support for refugees & asylum seekers in Northern California. People fleeing violence & persecution come to the United States from around the globe. Without legal status, language access or family ties, newcomers struggle to obtain needed medical, mental health and psychosocial support in this new context. Without status, people do not have access to public benefits or to most community-based services, and often live in great economic precarity and social isolation - especially during their initial months and years in the United States.
It is most beneficial and effective to offer holistic support that addresses people's varied psychosocial needs, along with emotional and psychological care to attend to the impacts of trauma and dislocation. This component of Global Mosaïque Care's programming thus attends to medical, psychiatric, legal, immigration, social, vocational, linguistic, educational and other psychosocial needs as people strive to build stability and security in their lives in exile. Close collaboration with immigration attorneys helps support people's claims for asylum and requests for protection from the United States.
People engaged in care can receive support for as long as they find it helpful and needed. In addition to ongoing therapy and case management, people can receive free psychiatric care and medication through pro bono psychiatry support generously offered by Dr. Amy Berlin with whom I collaborate closely.
These varied services support people's recovery from the impacts of severe trauma and loss; long-term separation from loved ones who often remain in danger in their country of origin; and continued insecurity and precarity experienced in the United States.
